‘That can’t be true, that really cannot be true’.

Freshman Gabe Guia felt the shock. It didn’t seem real. Freshman Travis Sitzman was dead, even though it seemed like Gabe had just talked to him.

“Trying to remember him will be very hard,” Gabe said. “Probably talking about him in the future will be the best thing. Just remembering his best memories.”

Sitzman died in his sleep April 3. He was only 14.

Ag teacher on drag-racing crew

Vroom. Vroom.

During his childhood years, Ag teacher, Rick Elmore watched the races on T.V., imagining himself in the middle of the action one day.

“As a kid I dreamed I would get to do this as a living,” Elmore said.

Elmore now works on a drag racing crew called Steve Johnson racing. Not only does he work on the motorcycle with the crew, he is also an Ag teacher.

“The neatest thing about getting to do this is I teach automotive and diesel,” Elmore said, “and I get to apply the things I’m teaching in class.”

National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) includes four professional categories for drag racing.

“My job is in the pro stock motorcycle category,” Elmore said.

The team Elmore works with is called Steve Johnson’s Racing. Click the link below to see more information on the crew.

“Steve Johnson is the owner and rider,” Elmore said.

Staffer learns life lesson through dance PDF Print E-mail

I will never forget the experience of being on the Eagle Doll drill team. My journey started in seventh grade in  2007. I joined the dance class, because I didn’t want to do P.E. or athletics. I wasn’t thinking about continuing and I didn’t think I would like it. On the first day of seventh grade I walked into the gym anxious. I didn’t know what to expect. The first thing I saw was a group of about 17 girls. Then the next thing I remember was the coach walked into the room and told us her name and a little bit about herself. Her name was Sarah Lemons. As she taught us different dances I realized that dancing was surprisingly fun. Then, on the last day of seventh grade, I remember Mrs. Lemons telling me I could go far in dancing and she sees great things in my future. By that point I wanted to come back the next year and dance again as an eighth grader.

Not only can former DHS assistant choir director Jo Joiner put a song in your heart, she’ll teach you how to sing it, too.

“I would say that when I first began playing music, I was instantly hooked. I never feel like I’m working, just playing,” she said.

A graduate from Texas Tech, Joiner left as an honor graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. She then began her work in church choirs with her husband, Gerre Joiner.

“The Lord really called Gerre to do church music, so we began to pursue that,” Joiner said.
